Chapter 20

She kept an eye on Salvatore after that, or to be precise, an ear. They spoke daily on the phone and he seemed to like the Essential Oils she had left with him.

The following week, a parcel arrived. With its Denver postmark and the familiar handwriting, she knew who it was from.

Faith took care of her mail, and would sift through pulling out important correspondence which she would then send on to Elsa.

She was good like that, and she also kept an eye on Elsa’s place.

This morning, Elsa opened the parcel and knew that many of the letters were Christmas cards. “These could have waited,” she muttered to herself. But it was good to be reminded of her friends, of her other life. She had become so caught up in Verona and Salvatore, that Denver and her familiar world had drifted away.

She looked through the cards, smiling as she glanced at the once-a-year messages penned by her friends, people whom she never heard of until the end of the year. She was the same.

Her brows lifted when she saw another Christmas card from Vernon. He has already sent a card in the last parcel. She opened it quickly, curiosity making her fingers rip the envelope open. The smile on her face turned to stone when she opened the small note inside and saw that it was signed from Maisy, Vernon’s wife. She never wrote to Elsa. It was always Vernon.

The hairs on the back of her neck soldiered to attention, as she sat forward, anxious to skim through the letter, do a quick first pass, scanning for bad news.
